it-sa 2019: Hornetsecurity creates new perspectives for email security

Hanover (15.10.2019) – You could certainly see, hear, feel and understand Hornetsecurity from the 8th through 10th of October at it-sa 2019: According to the slogan “Ich will Cloud” (eng. I want Cloud) the Email Cloud Security Provider presented an extraordinary program on its 200 m² booth, and showcased new ways of presenting its new Email Security Services.

Hornetsecurity and its eight partners welcomed the exhibition audience every hour with a spectacular stage show that included live music and acrobatic performances. The increasing cyber-crime on Microsoft Office 365 was the topic of discussion, with Hornetsecurity focusing on the risks of unencrypted data storage in the Office 365 cloud. The email security specialist also provided the solution to the existing problem – in form of its latest security service 365 Total Encryption. Directly after each show, Hornetsecurity presented the mechanisms and functions of the service during a live demonstration. 365 Total Encryption encrypts all content of all emails stored in the Microsoft Office 365 Cloud, providing the best possible protection against the growing threat of espionage, data theft and other hacker attack methods.

In addition to interesting and informative conversations about current topics and trends in the IT security industry at the Hornetsecurity booth, the interactive live quiz invited visitors to take part and challenge their IT know-how. On top of that, the winners received prizes such as Marshall headphones, keyfinders and original Hornetsecurity lap-top bags.

At Knowledge Forum 11 of it-sa, Hornetsecurity’s Partner Account Manager Tassilo Totzeck talked about why email in particular represents such a large attack vector in the area of cybercrime, how exactly a cyber-attack takes place and why Microsoft Office 365 is increasingly becoming the focus of hackers.

After the daily program, the email security expert hosted fair parties on two evenings: “Me and The Heat” and DJ Abuze cared for great beats and the Hornet crew tapped fresh free beer for the guests.

After the last live show on Thursday afternoon, Daniel Hofmann and Daniel Blank, CEOs of Hornetsecurity, once again thanked all partners, distributors, employees and artists for three sensational days at the fair in Nuremberg. The success of the fair for the Hornetsecurity partners has been confirmed already.  With more than 500 interesting conversations and new contacts, it is now time for the follow-up work.

it-sa once again fulfilled its title as Europe’s largest IT security trade fair: This year, around 15,600 visitors attended the four exhibition halls, where around 750 companies presented their latest IT security solutions. Hornetsecurity is proud to be part of the growing IT security industry and to make a major contribution of increasing security in email communications.

Hornetsecurity releases new feature for protection against encrypted malware attachments

Hornetsecurity releases new feature for protection against encrypted malware attachments

Hanover (01.07.2019) – With the help of encrypted email attachments, cyber criminals are currently trying to circumvent classic antivirus programs. Encryption prevents filter mechanisms from detecting the underlying malware. Since the beginning of the year, for example, the ransomware GandCrab has been spreading this way. In view of the increasing threat situation, the cloud security provider Hornetsecurity has developed a unique feature that recognizes this procedure and blocks the malicious email before it arrives in the email inbox.

“Nowadays, companies are investing much more in IT security than they did 5 years ago. Through AI and other intelligent defense mechanisms, attackers can no longer reach their target with simple methods. Therefore, cybercriminals are increasingly developing more detailed strategies to circumvent these mechanisms. Hornetsecurity technology enables us to react to targeted attacks at any time”, says Daniel Hofmann, CEO of Hornetsecurity. “With the new function Malicious Document Decryption we react quickly to the systematic approach of cybercriminals. The capabilities of Malicious Document Decryption are unique to the market.”

So that the encrypted document can be opened by the selected recipients in order to install the underlying malware unnoticed in the system, the fraud email contains the corresponding password in plain text.
Malicious Document Decryption analyzes the content of incoming emails with encrypted attachments for the appropriate password to remove the encryption. Using static and dynamic analysis techniques, the behavior of the decrypted file is examined. This ensures that the underlying malware is detected immediately and does not reach the recipient’s email inbox.

The new feature is part of the Advanced Threat Protection service and complements the protection for secure email communication against particularly intelligent and systematic cyber attacks. Hornetsecurity customers who already use the ATP service can rest assured: The feature was already integrated and activated in the service for all ATP users since the beginning of June.

Hornetsecurity launches first comprehensive Security & Compliance Suite for Microsoft Office 365

Hannover (02.10.18) – With “365 Total Protection”, the cloud security expert Hornetsecurity launches an industry-wide unique Security & Compliance Suite, which was especially developed for Microsoft Office 365.
When it comes to protecting corporate email communications, Gartner Research predicts that 95% of IT executives will choose cloud solutions for future decisions. The predominant on-premise appliances will almost disappear in the next three years. Microsoft is a major driver of this development and with Office 365 it offers its customers a collaboration solution from the cloud. Extended features such as MS Teams or Skype are an integral component of the Microsoft Suite and e-mail functionalities are also covered by the cloud solution.
In the context of cloud transformation, customers have high expectations because they want to maintain their flexibility and require a comprehensive range of functions that meet contractual and legal requirements. This does not concern the e-mail service as such – rather, solutions should be covered around e-mail communication, such as encryption, security gateway, automated signatures, archiving and advanced threat protection. 365 Total Protection is optimally adjusted to these needs and offers a comprehensive package that combines all features in one service.

“System houses and IT managers face new challenges with the increasing distribution of O365. So far, important business applications, such as the central provision of compliant disclaimers and consistent signatures, but also requirements such as e-mail encryption, have been implemented locally“, says Daniel Blank, Managing Director of Hornetsecurity.
“Since the mail servers will now be provided from the cloud as part of O365, service providers and IT managers need new concepts to comply with their security and compliance requirements. In order to secure and complement a cloud service such as Office 365 in the best possible way, such functions and security solutions will also have to be moved to the cloud. This is exactly why Hornetsecurity developed 365 Total Protection.“
365 Total Protection is the Security & Compliance Suite from the Cloud, for the Cloud. With a wide range of features, the new product was especially developed for Microsoft O365 and can be integrated seamlessly. Users benefit from a particularly uncomplicated onboarding: Within three clicks, Office merges with 365 Total Protection.
In addition, there are many companies that are looking for a hybrid solution, because they want to transfer individual departments to Office 365 or maintain a coexistent operation. With 365 Total Protection Hornetsecurity supports multi-step migration.
Hornetsecurity’s new product offers within the 21 business and security features a wide range of functionalities that extend the Microsoft service. For example, the Company Disclaimer in conjunction with User-based Individual Signatures – a central control over company-wide signatures and disclaimers that automatically complements outgoing messages with the legally required information of a company, which also enables individual signatures and graphics to be sent in groups.
365 Total Protection takes away companies’ concerns about O365 privacy and compliance policies and is the first product ever to help secure this path. On the 9th of October this year, Hornetsecurity will present all services and features that come with 365 Total Protection to the public for the first time, at the it-sa exhibition in Nuremberg.

In addition to the professional exchange at the trade fair, the event character should not be neglected either. On the first evening, Tuesday 09.10.18, the exhibition booth will be turned into a true party zone, starting from 6.30 p.m. Thanks to the stage and live band, it almost resembles a rock concert. Not to be missed is the popular Hornetsecurity beer wagon, which already made big headlines at the HAJ Marathon this year. Managing Director Daniel Hofmann announced that a total of more than 5,000 litres of free beer will flow on the trade fair.
Hornetsecurity’s main goal is to show their character. “Our business partners and customers greatly appreciate the fact that there are still ‘real people’ behind our innovative solutions – our employees who put their heart and soul into it,” says Daniel Hofmann.

Users of Mac OS version 10.13 (High Sierra) will benefit from one of the new features in particular. With this update, Hornetdrive now supports Apple’s new file system APFS, which has replaced the outdated HFS+. So you can use Hornetdrive like before on your brand-new iMac od MacBook, too.

Export of log files facilitates data analysis

Another practical feature increases Hornetdrive’s user friendliness. Version 4.5 offers a new export and filter function. This facilitates users to keep an overview on all events taking place. Every activity is logged in a so-called “event log file”, which can contain a high number of data. With the new export and filter functionality, these data can be downloaded easily as a CSV file and thus filtered and analyzed outside of Hornetdrive.

Always stay up to date

Also, the new notification feature helps users react and adapt to recent activities within Hornetdrive. This functionality can be found under “Settings” and “Notifications”. There they can determine whether to receive pop-up or email notifications for certain events like file conflicts, new file versions, the renaming of folders or new drive members.

WannaCry: No harm for Hornetsecurity customers

Hornetsecurity ATP deflects global ransomware attack from the first malicious email

WannaCry has caused severe damage in more than 150 countries: The woldwide attacks, in which for example the British National Health Service, the car manufacturer Renault and some systems of Germany’s railway company Deutsche Bahn have fallen victim, took advantage of several weaknesses at once. However, Hornetsecurity Advanced Threat Protection was able to detect and prevent the dangerous ransomware attack from the first email onward.

WannaCry is a ransom software that is distributed via email. Activated on a local device, the malware starts encrypting the stored data. After that, the user is being asked to pay a certain ransom in order to receive the decryption key, a procedure which security experts advise not to do. WannaCry uses an exploit, that initially has been developed by the NSA and made public by a hacker group called “Shadow Brokers”.   The success of WannaCry comes from the fact that it uses a weakness in Microsoft’s „Server Message Block (SMB) Protocol“. Through this, it spreads quickly and infects other systems, which lead to the high worldwide distribution rate. WannaCry is exploiting the old Windows XP operating system, as this is still in use but Microsoft stopped providing security updates for. With the emergence of WannaCry, the company quickly changed that and distributed a patch.   Hornetsecurity Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) detected the zero-day ransomware from its first appearance by using a dynamic pattern analysis in its sandbox and put the malware into quarantine. Additional analyses revealed that WannaCry installs a DOUBLEPULSAR Backdoor variant which then plants malicious code onto the local device. After that, the program encrypts various files and adds the file ending .wncry to them, for example finance.xlsx into finance.xlsx.wncry. This renders the files useless. At the same time the infected hosts become part of a botnet, which is being commanded by a TOR network.   Hornetsecurity recommends the following procedures to protect yourself from an infection. Companies and private users still using Windows XP should immediately use the patch provided by Microsoft and update their system. Even more effective is the installation of a more recent operating system with active security updates (at least MS17-010). Also, companies should adapt their firewalls so that incoming SMB traffic on port 445 as well as outgoing TOR traffic will be blocked. Additionally, the security specialists from Hornetsecurity recommend to thoroughly check emails containing invoices or other attachments (office, script or executable files) and to scan them using a virus check. With the URL rewriting and URL scanning engines Hornetsecurity ATP offers a service for in-depth URL analysis in emails – for an all-around protection from new dangers.
