365 Total Backup and Microsoft Graph: Staying Aligned With Microsoft 365

Written by Hornetsecurity / 01.06.2026 / ,

Microsoft has announced that Exchange Web Services, commonly known as EWS, will start being retired in October 2026, with a complete shutdown of service by April 2027. This is an industry-wide change that affects applications and services connecting to Exchange Online across the Microsoft 365 ecosystem. More information can be found here

We are already preparing for this transition, and our focus for 365 Total Backup is to keep backup and recovery capabilities seamless, reliable, and aligned with Microsoft’s direction.

What is EWS, and what is changing?

EWS is one of the long-standing ways applications connect to Exchange Online data, such as emails, calendars, and contacts.

Microsoft is moving these integrations toward Microsoft Graph, its unified API platform for Microsoft 365. Graph provides a modern, consistent way for services to connect with Microsoft 365, and it is the direction Microsoft is taking for the future.

What does this mean for 365 Total Backup?

365 Total Backup is built for the long term, and so is our Microsoft 365 integration. As Microsoft evolves, we evolve with it. Customers can continue using 365 Total Backup with the familiar experience and capabilities they know and rely on.

What are we doing?

Hornetsecurity works closely with Microsoft and continuously evolves 365 Total Backup to stay aligned with the latest Microsoft 365 technology.

The migration to Microsoft Graph is already underway. We are moving the relevant 365 Total Backup capabilities to the latest Graph APIs, in line with Microsoft’s way forward. By doing so, we continue to bring 365 Total Backup closer to Microsoft 365 and strengthen the integration for the long term.

Our goal is for customers to experience this as a smooth technology update, with 365 Total Backup continuing to provide dependable Microsoft 365 backup and recovery without disruption.

What is needed from users?

For most customers, no immediate action is required.

As the transition progresses, some customers may be prompted to regrant the necessary Microsoft 365 permissions directly from within 365 Total Backup. This will be handled conveniently inside the product. Other than that, no additional action is expected.

Looking ahead

The move from EWS to Microsoft Graph is part of the broader evolution of the Microsoft 365 ecosystem. 365 Total Backup is evolving alongside it.
